1. Check the controller or management platform
Enterprise access points are usually managed centrally. Before you buy, find out what the unit expects to talk to.
- Ruckus: ZoneFlex and T-series units are managed by a ZoneDirector controller, or in some cases run Unleashed firmware so one access point acts as the master. Check licensing and firmware for the exact model.
- Ubiquiti UniFi: UniFi access points are managed by the free UniFi Network Controller. A unit that was adopted by another controller needs to be reset first.
- Ubiquiti airMAX (for example NanoStation): these are configured through their own web interface, not the UniFi controller.
Here is how the controller question looks for our current Wi-Fi listings:
- Ubiquiti UAP-AC Outdoor Access Point: Managed with the UniFi Network Controller (free software). Assumed factory reset.
- Ruckus T301s Outdoor Access Point (901-T301-WW51): May need a Ruckus ZoneDirector controller or Unleashed firmware. Check licensing before you buy.
- Ruckus ZoneFlex 7782 Outdoor Access Point (WW01): May need a Ruckus ZoneDirector controller or Unleashed firmware. Check licensing before you buy.
- Ruckus T301N Outdoor Access Point: May need a Ruckus ZoneDirector controller or Unleashed firmware. Check licensing before you buy.
- Ruckus ZoneFlex Enterprise Access Point: May need a Ruckus ZoneDirector controller or Unleashed firmware. Check licensing before you buy.
- Ruckus ZoneDirector 3000 WLAN Controller: Standalone appliance. Confirm licence count and firmware on enquiry.
- Ubiquiti NanoStation (NSM5) 5 GHz Outdoor Wireless Unit: Standalone. Configured through its own web interface (airOS), not the UniFi controller.
- TP-Link AC1200 Dual-Band Wireless Access Point: Check management on the listing.
2. Match the PoE standard
Power over Ethernet saves running a mains cable to every access point, but the injector and the device must agree. Standard 802.3af and 802.3at PoE are common on enterprise access points. Some radios use passive PoE, which can damage a device if you plug in the wrong source. Read the label on the unit, then see our PoE injectors and adapters or a PoE switch if you need a power source.
3. Outdoor use and ratings
Outdoor access points are sealed for dust and rain. Our outdoor Ruckus and Ubiquiti listings mention the rating where we have recorded it. Always ask whether the mounting kit and brackets are included, since accessories are confirmed per listing.
4. Wi-Fi generation and capacity
802.11n access points suit light-to-moderate use, while 802.11ac models add more speed on the 5 GHz band. For high-density areas, more access points with lower power usually beat one powerful unit, which is how event networks are normally designed.
5. Understand the condition label
On ProNetGear, Tested means our inventory records list the item as Grade A/B, tested and working. Untested means we have no test result on record. For parts means sold for repair or spares. See the about page FAQ for more on how we describe condition.
Frequently asked questions
Can a used Ruckus access point work without a controller?
Some Ruckus ZoneFlex and T-series models can run Unleashed firmware, which lets a group of access points run without a separate controller. Support depends on the exact model and firmware, and firmware downloads can require a vendor account, so confirm the model and licensing before you buy.
What PoE do I need for an outdoor access point?
Check the unit label or datasheet. Many enterprise access points use standard 802.3af or 802.3at PoE. Some Ubiquiti airMAX devices use passive PoE, which is not interchangeable with standard injectors. Match the injector to the device.
Do used access points come with a warranty?
Our items are sold as-is. A 7-day testing warranty is negotiable on most listings. Ask us when you enquire.
How do I get a price?
Prices are on quote. Message us the SKU from the listing on WhatsApp or email and we will reply with price, quantity and what is in the box.
